Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

6th August 2024

A fascinating issue of the Starry Plough/An Camhéachta from October 2001. Many thanks to the person who forwarded it to the Archive.

The analysis offered by the IRSP focuses on the issue of policing:

The Republican Socialist Movement has been quite clear and consistent in regards to the policing debate, the RUC in any way, shape or form, under any set of initials, wearing any uniform is unacceptable to our people.

‘Patten’ itself is a compromise, not on policing but on fair and equal policing, why should anyone have to make compromises to secure fair and equal policing is beyond us. Let us say clearly here tonight that our communities have the right to fair and equal policing, nobody has the right to negotiate a compromise on fair and equal policing. The ‘Patten’ compromise was entitled a consultative process, many political parties and community groups attended public meetings and made written submissions, the IRSP were no different and made our views quite clear on the issue.

Other pieces note the Nationalist community ‘under constant attack in North Belfast’.

There’s a report on racism in Cork and an interview with an immigrant. It notes:

The I.R.S.P. in Cork implores the community to consider how we treat members of our ethnic community. We draw a comparison of attitude between those who attacked a family in Shandon Street, Cork, and those loyalists who have launched horrific attacks and a bombing on Innocent Catholic children on their way to school in the Ardoyne area of Belfast.

There is an outline of Republican Socialism and the centre spread asserts: No War But the Class War! There’s a ‘personal reflection by a Dublin IRSP and anti-drugs activist’ and also a long piece on hunger strikes in Turkey.
