Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution
6th January 2025
As a preface this sort of documentation is very useful in offering an insight into the development and internal life of a political formation like the Workers’ Party and any materials of a similar sort from other political parties or groups (that are not confidential) would be very welcome additions to the Archive.
This is a short two page document issued by the Dublin North East Constituency Council of the Workers’ Party. It was intended to inform members and probationary members of the Constituency Education Programme for 1988/1989.
It notes in the letter from the Education Officer that:
It cannot be over-stressed, the importance of political education, for a developing ‘workers’ party’. Without it we are lost in the arena of political discussion and debate and unable to articulate our Party philosophy and policy. With it we can build confidence in ourselves, with whichi we can confront our class enemies, win the arguments and subsequently win the support of the working-class.
The range of topics to be discussed are broad-ranging, from ‘The Party structures & democratic centralism’ to ‘The State & Revolution’. Speakers include Eamon Smullen and Sean Kenny as well as then Cllr. Eamonn Gilmore and the local TD Pat McCartan.

I would have been at branch meetings saying we need more education meetings. Then I didn’t turn up for any of those listed in this doc! In fairness I think a fair few were cancelled for various reasons. The only one I remember having an excuse for was the one on communication with Oliver Donoghue. Ireland had a match on that night iirc.
I do recall an education meeting in a member’s house at which was to be shown a recently-produced video on the history of the party. Videos were a new enough thing at the time. But the party member’s young lad couldn’t get the video to play in their video player despite his very best efforts. Before we had a chance to try again, word came from Gardiner Place that the video shouldn’t be shown, I think because it was too honest and detailed about some of the party’s history – stuff about feud deaths and killings in Belfast might scare off some of the newer southern membership. That’s what I guessed at the time anyway.

Skipping educationals, tsk tsk, disgraceful carry on. No wonder your line on Ukraine is incorrect.
😉

Now that’s a video it would be interesting to see. I don’t recall going to any of them either! But the other thing is weren’t we all too busy canvassing, getting papers out, etc, really to have much time for educational meetings. And with a TD in the constituency from 87 onwards it just got worse.

Hmmm. If so… was that one of the mistakes we made?
