Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution
13th January 2025
Many thanks to Alan Kinsella/Irish Election Literature for scanning and forward this to the Archive.
This document is of particular interest being an early edition of Red Patriot from the CPI (M-L). Four pages long it covers a range of areas including the Offences Against the State Act, and the front page article notes ‘continuous harassment and raiding of anti-imperialist gourds; the attacks on the same of communist and anti-imperialist literature, especially Red Patriot; the blatantly engineered attacks on the Cork and Limerick branches of Progressive Books and Periodicals; the sentencing of Comrade Mike Hehir to 4 months for selling Communist literature and in particular the incarceration of Comrade Martin Dolphin’.
A statement on the second page from the CPI (M-L) argues that arrests and other activities indicate the ‘era of final collapse of imperialism’. It concludes:
The need now is to meet reactionary arrogance wit invincible revolutionary arrogance and to advance the resistance movement forward to the new level where the futile attempts at internment can be surmounted. This can be done by developing mass democracy on an even broader and more daring scale and exposing the essence of imperialism and pointing out the need to have no compromise with its reactionary course and institutions. We must oppose all liberal sellouts and fraudulent compromises with the bourgeoisie.
Followed by a number of slogans:
Advance the resistance movement to the new stage!
Meet reactionary arrogance with revolutionary arrogance!
Use mass democracy to arouse the class hatred of the oppressed people!
Down with all attempts at compromise with the bourgeoisie!
Another article covers the attack on Progressive Books in Cork. It suggests that: “The attack… engineered by the lackeys of British imperliasm in Ireland, Lynch and the rest of the Irish Compradors has been meeting with continuous and growing resistance from the revolutionary people of Cork in defence of their treasured bookstore’. And it argues that ‘following the attacks on Friday morning reports were received that groups of progressive and democratic people had attacked 2 local police stations and broken their windows and that a revolutionary slogan ‘DEATH TO FASCIST POLICE’ was written on the walls of one of them’. The piece concludes by promising that ‘Progressive Books and Periodicals will continue to follow the call of the CPI (M-L) and will persist in vigorously disseminating Mao Tse Tung Thought thoroughout Cork city and County’.
