Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

27th January 2025

This poster joins the Archive’s growing collection of posters and is a very useful addition to the body of materials from Éirígí already held in in the Archive. This particular poster is of considerable interest because it is produced by the support group for Éirígí in Britain, that is Clann Éirígí, and this particular instance from the London Clann Éirígí group.

Dating from around 2015 the poster advertises the growing resistance in the Republic to water charges and against austerity and notes that 57% of people had refused to pay the tax at that point. The poster invites people to listen to ‘stories form the frontline of this resistance…hear how communities in Ireland are fighting back against austerity and what are the lessons for the working class in Britain’.

Ironic or what. Did teh attendees realise where they were living. “We’ll bill you using our assessed household charge only if we’ve tried, but can’t fit a meter at your property. We base this on the typical amount of water used by customers with a similar number of bedrooms.

The number of bedrooms at your property is the number you’d quote if renting or selling your home. This includes bedrooms that may be used differently, like an office.

We’ll apply a three-bedroom charge if you haven’t told us the number of bedrooms at your home. When you update us on your property, we’ll amend your charge from that date.

    Single occupier tariff

If you’re on our assessed household charge and you live alone, we can put you on our single occupier tariff. This does not apply to single parents with children at the same address. We may ask you for proof of single occupancy. How we calculate your bill

We work out your clean and wastewater charges based on the number of bedrooms at your property. Or if you’ve told us you’re a single occupier. We then add fixed charges of £51.92 for clean water and £82.93 for wastewater. These cover our essential running costs like pipe maintenance and bill and payment processing.”https://www.thameswater.co.uk/help/account-and-billing/understand-your-bill/assessed-household-charges
