About
The Socialist International (SI) is an association of social-democratic and labour parties, formed in 1951 as a successor to the Labour and Socialist International. They are represented in Ireland by the Irish Labour Party and the SDLP.
In 2013 a rival international, the Progressive Alliance, was formed by members including the German SPD. The Irish Labour Party and British Labour Party (BLP) both participated, with the BLP downgrading its SI membership to ‘observer’ status.
