About
Militant was established in 1972 as a tendency within the Irish Labour Party, as Militant in the UK had done in the British Labour Party. Organising to bring the Labour Party to socialism the Tendency was overtly Trotskyist. Expelled in the late 1980s from the ILP they merged with the Labour and Trade Union Group in Northern Ireland as the Socialist Party.

Militants Origins
By: Charlie Cairns | 18th November 2013, 8:59am
Militant's 1st irish base was in Derry & Coleraine, 1968-9, it was as an extension of this work that they ended up with a Dublin base. By 1972 there were groups in Coleraine, Derry and Belfast. SP was set up abt 1996, so in the early 90s they operated as Militant Labour North and South.
