Commentary From The Cedar Lounge Revolution

Many thanks to Jim Lane for donating this and other copies of Gralton to the Left Archive. It is intended to reproduce these every month or so for the next year and a half and thereby have a full run of them online.
As noted previously Gralton sought remarkably effectively to position itself as a left wing magazine in the mould of This Week, Magill and other publications.
This edition, as with previous ones, covers a wide range of areas. The lead article Labour: Still worth it after all these years? and an interview with Michael D. Higgins and a history of the Labour Left. This provides a good insight into the nature of the Labour Party during that period.
Other articles include Matt Merrigan on the pay freeze, an overview of the roots of partition from John Goodwillie, radical theatre and ‘gays’ in the unions. There are also pieces on ‘Let’s hear it for RTÉ: one point of view on the argument about pirate radio’. There’s a piece on why socialism hasn’t taken root in the US.
An entertaining column by Gene Kerrigan written from the point of view of ‘after the revolution’ rounds off the issue.

The Labour Left. I had a comrade in the WP in the late eighties and early nineties who used to delight in calling those saddos ‘those pathetic creatures of the Labour Left’. Sadly it turned out that we were all saddos, all pathetic creatures.
